Traveling Head Cross Cutter:

Traveling Head Cross Cutter

The custom sheeter, comprising four modules—sheeter, middle conveyor, flipper, and exit conveyor—processes a continuous material web into rectangular pieces. Key functions include:

Sheeting: The sheeter module uses an input nip set roller, adjustable via air cylinders, to feed the web onto a serpentine conveyor belt. A servo-driven flying cross cutter, with a rolling score blade, moves laterally across the web to cut it to length at line speed, supported by a plastic cutting pad. Servo motors with encoders ensure precise speed and position control, matching the incoming web speed. Clamp cylinders secure the web, and break-apart cylinders create a cut-line gap before cutting.

Material Transfer (Middle Conveyor): The servo-driven middle conveyor accelerates cut sheets away from the sheeter to the flipper. Adjustable hold-down rollers maintain sheet alignment, preventing skewing. Belt tensioners allow periodic adjustments, and an encoder provides position feedback for precise control.

Flipping: The flipper module rotates designated sheets 180 degrees. Sheets enter between upper and lower conveyor belts, are clamped, and rotated by a flipper servo motor, then accelerated to the exit conveyor. Two servo motors (conveyor and flipper) with encoders control movement, and adjustable cams set belt spacing. A safety enclosures with latched guard doors ensures controlled stops during emergencies.

Exit Conveyance: The exit conveyor, running at constant speed with a non-servo motor, accepts sheets from the flipper and conveys them for further processing or collection.

Specifications (as pictured):

· The cross cutter cuts webs to preset lengths ranging from 24” to 80”.

· Handles web widths from 35” to 65” and material thicknesses from 0.04” (1mm) to 0.16” (4mm).

· Features servo-driven conveyors, cutoff module, and cutter for accurate operation.

· Uses an encoder to monitor speed and length, syncing the flying cutoff conveyor with the web.

· Employs upstream and downstream clamps to secure the web during cutting and separate the sheet post-cut.

· Tidland Class III Score Cutter provides clean crosscuts with a replaceable blade and UHMW anvil on a steel backup plate.

· Flips each cut sheet alternately to the opposite side using a servo-driven trapping conveyor system.

· Operated via a CompactLogix PLC with a color touch HMI for settings and monitoring.

· Runs at web speeds of 1.6 to 16 feet per minute with a sheet cut tolerance of ±1/16”.

· Includes two static elimination zones with up to four static bars (top and bottom) after the cutter and flipper modules.
